It was truly a night of Christmas spirit as Katolikong Pinoy sa Bahrain concluded its annual Simbang Gabi at the Sacred Heart Church. From 15th to 23rd December, around 1,000 Filipino parishioners were in attendance to join the anticipated Mass at 8:30pm each evening was officiated by Fr. Anthony Almazan, OFM Cap, the Assistant Parish Priest and Spiritual Director of the community, together with the visiting priest, Fr. Jeffrey Torres, OFM Cap.

The nine-day devotional period culminated in a festive Christmas Eve, highlighted by the continuation of the Dawn Masses at 4:00am. This year, the final Mass held particular significance as it was officiated by His Excellency Bishop Aldo Berardi, 0.SS.T. Enhancing the Christmas Eve celebration, a special Panunuluyan play was performed at the start of the ninth day Dawn Mass. It is a beautiful tradition that touches the heart of the Christmas story with emphasis on hope and hospitality.

It brings the community together in the search for shelter of the Holy Family to remind everyone of the compassion and generosity that must be opened up to them in this season. This touching reenactment not only entertains the parishioners but also binds them closer to the true meaning of Christmas, thus making the Dawn Mass a real celebration.

Reflecting on the meaning of Simbang Gabi this holiday season, Salve Nicodemus, a teacher at Philippine School Bahrain, shared her thoughts on Simbang Gabi — a tradition that resonates deeply with overseas workers, ‘’Simbang Gabi reminds me of spiritual preparation for Christmas. It gives me an avenue toward reconnecting with my faith, as well as the people surrounding me. It gives that sense of community and warmth, therefore enabling me to appreciate gratitude and humility toward the blessings in this season’’.
