A group of MPs have submitted a proposal calling for the creation of a national platform to identify and facilitate the repair of homes belonging to low-income citizens. The proposal, spearheaded by MPs Basma Mubarak, Mamdouh Al Saleh, Dr Mahdi Al Showaikh, Abdulnabi Salman, and Hanan Fardan, aims to address the urgent need for home repairs across the Kingdom.
The explanatory memorandum accompanying the proposal highlights the struggles faced by low-income families whose homes are either dilapidated or at risk of becoming so. It argues that timely, minor repairs can significantly extend the lifespan of these buildings at a lower cost compared to the extensive and expensive repairs required if the deterioration is allowed to progress further.
Beyond the practical benefits, the MPs emphasise the cultural significance of preserving older homes. The memorandum states that repairing these older properties will help maintain Bahrain's unique architectural character and rich Islamic heritage.
The proposed national platform would involve collaboration between several key ministries, including the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning, the Ministry of Works, the Ministry of Municipalities, and the Ministry of Social Development. The proposal also suggests providing temporary, suitable housing for affected families during the repair process. The initiative aims to provide a comprehensive and coordinated approach to addressing the housing needs of vulnerable citizens.
