Professor Timothy Insoll Honored with OBE for His Groundbreaking Work in Bahrain’s Archaeology

His Majesty King Charles III of the United Kingdom has recognised Professor Timothy Insoll, Al-Qasimi Professor of African and Islamic Archaeology at the University of Exeter, with an honour in his new year’s honours list. Professor Insoll is made an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to Archaeology in Bahrain and UK/Bahrain relations.
Professor Insoll has been working for many years in Bahrain to unearth and explain its fascinating history stretching back millennia. His projects have studied the spread of Islam in the region, the archaeology of water irrigation technology, as well as helping to explain other episodes of Bahrain’s history from the archaeological record.
He has worked closely with the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, including participating in lecture series in Bahrain. He is Honorary Archaeological Adviser to the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Bahrain. Professor Insoll has inspired young people – Bahraini and international – in the field of archaeology and helped to describe the incredible depth of Bahrain’s archaeological wealth to international audiences through academic research and publications.
His contribution is another example of the multi-layered relationship between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the United Kingdom that encompasses so many sectors and areas of enquiry.
