The Parliament will vote next Tuesday on a motion to establish a parliamentary inquiry committee to investigate the effectiveness of housing plans and programmes implemented by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning.
The motion was submitted by eight MPs: Mohamed Moosa, Hesham Al Awadhi, Zainab Abdulameer, Khalid Buanaq, Bader Al Tamimi, Eman Showaiter, Mohammed Al Aliwi, and Mahmood Fardan. The accompanying memorandum highlights the significant public concern surrounding housing issues in Bahrain.
It emphasises the need to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of the Ministry's plans and programmes in addressing housing demands, particularly given the long waiting lists for citizens seeking suitable housing that provides a decent life, a constitutionally guaranteed right for low-income individuals.
The inquiry will focus on six key areas: The fairness of housing unit allocation among citizens and the criteria used by the ministry will be examined. The effectiveness of the Mazaya and Tasheel programmes in meeting diverse housing needs and their ability to address long waiting lists will also be assessed.

Various procedures and mechanisms employed by the ministry, including the allocation of housing plots and the establishment of new housing cities, will be scrutinised. The ministry's plans to increase investment and strengthen partnerships with the private sector will be evaluated.
The legality of interest rates charged to citizens benefiting from housing services, including financing loans, will be investigated. Finally, a comprehensive review of the Ministry's overall performance in meeting the housing needs of Bahraini citizens will be undertaken.
The committee's findings will be crucial in determining the future direction of Bahrain's housing policies and addressing the concerns of citizens waiting for adequate housing.
