Until yesterday, Manu Mohanan, an ambulance nurse residing in Bahrain, was grappling with how to afford travel expenses for his family’s trip back home. By Friday evening, his life took a dramatic turn when he won Dh30 million in the Big Ticket draw.
“When the hosts called me, I knew it was real because I’ve watched the live draw many times,” Manu told Khaleej Times. “But I didn’t feel excited—I was just numb. My mind still hasn’t processed it. Life has been so tough that this kind of windfall felt completely unimaginable.”
Manu was on duty when he received the life-changing call. Overwhelmed, he immediately shared the news with the 16 others who contributed to the ticket. “Some of them had tears in their eyes,” he said. “We all have debts, and this will help us clear them. Maybe some of us can even build a house. These men are like my brothers. We’re colleagues, and we’ve always supported each other. Even those who left our workplace continued contributing to the ticket.”
A Family Celebration
Manu’s first calls after the announcement were to his wife and mother. His mother, who joined him in Bahrain four months ago to help care for his newborn son, was overjoyed. “We were planning to take our son to a temple in India in March, but I was worried about how we’d afford the tickets and expenses. Now, I’m speechless,” he said.
Manu’s wife, also a nurse, recently joined him in Bahrain after a financially challenging process of certifying her qualifications and finding employment. “This win has removed so many burdens for us,” he added.
Five Years of Perseverance
For five years, Manu and his friends have been pooling their money to buy Big Ticket entries, despite tight budgets. “We couldn’t really afford it, but we cut expenses to make it happen. Last year, we paused buying tickets, but one member of the group pushed us to restart. Five months later, here we are with the jackpot,” he said.
A Tribute to His Mother
Manu, who was raised by his single mother after his father left when he was just a year old, plans to prioritize her comfort. “My mother has been my rock. She worked as a laborer, carrying bricks and stones, to ensure I got an education. Now, I want her to live a restful and comfortable life. The first thing I want to do is buy her something special,” he said.
The win is not just a financial windfall but a monumental shift for Manu, his family, and his group of friends, marking the culmination of years of hope and persistence.
