A Bahraini businessman has been sentenced to one year in prison and fined 35,000 Bahraini dinars, plus ordered to pay an additional 35,700 dinars in outstanding taxes. The 50-year-old was convicted of evading taxes on four tax returns totaling 35,700 dinars.

According to court documents, a legal advisor with the National Bureau for Revenue, acting with judicial authority, discovered that the defendant's company had evaded taxes despite filing tax returns.

The defendant admitted to the overdue payments, citing stalled projects as the reason for his inability to pay on time. He claimed he would settle the debt once the market conditions improved.

The Public Prosecution charged the defendant with completely evading Value Added Tax (VAT) on taxable services, after more than 120 days had passed since the tax returns were filed with the National Revenue Agency.
