After years of frustration for families waiting decades for housing, Parliament has approved a bold plan to set aside land for housing projects in every governorate, weaving the provision into the country’s state budget.
The decision, made on Tuesday, is being hailed as a step towards easing the pressure on Bahrain’s housing system and addressing the growing demand for homes.
Led by MP Hamad Al Doy, the proposal had the backing of fellow MPs Bader Al Tamimi, Zainab Abdulameer, Maryam Al Sayegh, and Abdulwahid Qarata.
The group presented their plan as a way to tackle Bahrain’s long-standing housing shortages, particularly for families who have endured wait times exceeding 20 years.
The explanatory memorandum attached to the proposal laid bare the challenges faced by citizens, describing the backlog as a “weight that has destabilised families socially and economically”.
It highlighted the ever-increasing demand for housing, which has left many applications gathering dust for decades without resolution.
