A proposal to impose tougher penalties on reckless drivers responsible for fatal crashes is back for parliamentary discussion this Tuesday, following its review in October.
The amendment calls for a minimum six-month jail sentence and fines between BD 2,000 and BD 6,000. However, it has faced strong opposition from the Ministry of Interior, which questions the practicality and narrow scope of the proposal. Supported by five MPs—Abdulla Al Rumaihi, Abdulhakim Al Sheno, Ali Al Doseri, Najeeb Al Kuwari, and Waleed Al Doseri—the amendment targets dangerous driving behaviours such as reckless overtaking and misuse of emergency lanes, which are often linked to fatal accidents.
The Ministry of Interior argues that the proposal could undermine judges’ ability to consider individual circumstances by imposing mandatory minimum penalties. The ministry also criticised the vague wording in the amendment, particularly terms like ‘security and safety,’ which it believes could lead to inconsistent enforcement.
The committee reviewing the proposal has recommended rejecting it, citing existing laws—such as Article 342 of the Penal Code—that already address reckless driving leading to fatalities.
