General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, the Minister of Interior, was presented with the World Health Organisation (WHO) certification designating the Capital Governorate as a “Healthy Governorate” – a remarkable achievement that makes it the first governorate in the Eastern Mediterranean Region to receive this prestigious recognition.

The ceremony, held at the Ministry of Interior, was attended by Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulrahman Al Khalifa, Governor of the Capital Governorate, and Dr. Jaleela bint Al Sayed Jawad Hassan, the Minister of Health.

Gen. Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah expressed his congratulations to the Capital Governorate, acknowledging the accomplishment as a national milestone that reflects Bahrain’s ongoing commitment to improving public health and quality of life for its citizens. He emphasized that the success of the “Healthy Cities Project,” which has been implemented across the governorate, contributes directly to the kingdom’s broader sustainable development goals. This is in line with the comprehensive development process initiated by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and supported by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister.

“The designation of the Capital Governorate as a 'Healthy Governorate' is an important achievement for Bahrain. It highlights the commitment to improving public health and fostering partnerships across the community to achieve our goals,” said Gen. Shaikh Rashid.

The Interior Minister also commended the efforts of the Ministry of Health in driving this achievement, underscoring the key role played in attaining the WHO certification. Furthermore, he acknowledged the successful development initiatives and projects launched by the Capital Governorate, which have been instrumental in enhancing communication with residents and addressing their needs.

The “Healthy Cities Programme,” which began in 2017, saw Umm Al Hassam being the first neighborhood to be designated a Healthy City in 2018. This was followed by the city of Manama in 2021, which earned recognition as the first “Healthy Capital” in the region. The programme was later expanded to cover all villages and cities in the governorate, earning it the status of the first Healthy Governorate in the Eastern Mediterranean Region.

Gen. Shaikh Rashid expressed his gratitude to the Capital Governor and all personnel involved in this achievement. He concluded by wishing continued success in their efforts to serve the kingdom and its residents.

This recognition reinforces Bahrain’s commitment to the well-being of its people and its ongoing initiatives to create healthier, more sustainable communities.
