Cooling water mist sprinklers and a specially designed asphalt surface to ease joint and back pain are among the planned upgrades for A’ali Walkway, with work set to begin in February, according to Northern Municipal Council member Abdulla Ashoor.

“This project responds to residents’ concerns and addresses long-standing issues with the walkway, which has served the community since its opening in April 2003,” Ashoor said. He explained that the current redbrick surface, which causes discomfort, will be replaced with a durable asphalt surface more suited for walking. “We initially considered a rubber surface, but Bahrain’s extreme heat and changing weather conditions would quickly degrade it, making repairs costly. Asphalt, on the other hand, is more practical and can be coloured to blend with the environment, as seen in Sharjah and Al Ain.” The upgrade, costing BHD 174,398.290, will be carried out by Gulf Fencing & Specialist Surfacing.

Ashoor mentioned that residents had frequently raised concerns about the current surface, which they say aggravates joint and back pain. “The misting system will cool the walkway during the intense summer heat, encouraging more people to walk and exercise,” he added.

Additional improvements include the refurbishment of restrooms, buildings, and children’s play areas, as well as the installation of shading structures. Safety will be enhanced with the addition of security cameras and solar-powered lighting poles, reducing electricity costs and providing a sustainable energy source. “We are committed to making the walkway safer, more welcoming, and better equipped to meet the needs of the community,” Ashoor said. He also expressed his gratitude to Northern Municipality Director Lamya Al Fadhala and her team for their dedication and collaboration.
