A proposal to establish a dedicated pathway and specialised medical team for sickle cell patients at Salmaniya Medical Complex will be put to a vote in Parliament next Tuesday.

The proposal, submitted by MP Maryam Al Dhaen, calls for a separate section within the emergency unit to be staffed by specialists to ensure immediate and effective treatment for sickle cell anaemia patients. The Services Committee has unanimously endorsed the initiative, emphasising its alignment with Article 8 of Bahrain’s Constitution, which guarantees healthcare for all citizens and mandates the state to build and maintain medical facilities.

The Bahrain Society for SCD Patients Care praised the proposal as a significant step toward improving patient welfare. The society also urged the government to take additional measures, including the creation of a dedicated care pathway for women to address their specific needs. It called for an increase in the number of trained staff focused on sickle cell care and ongoing professional development to better equip medical teams to handle emergencies and hospital treatments effectively.

The Health Ministry has indicated that many aspects of the plan are already in place.
