A Bahraini father has successfully challenged a one-year discrepancy in his marriage certificate, paving the way for his son to obtain official Bahraini documents.
The case highlights a bureaucratic hurdle caused by a clerical error made by a marriage registrar.
According to lawyer Ali Kareem, his client initiated legal proceedings against his wife, the Ministry of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments, and the General Directorate of Nationality, Passports, and Residence.
Wedding Date
The lawsuit sought to invalidate the original marriage certificate, which incorrectly listed the wedding date as December 31, 2003, instead of the correct date, December 31, 2002. The discrepancy had prevented the issuance of Bahraini birth certificates, identity cards, and passports for the couple’s son.
The couple married in Bahrain in 2002 and subsequently moved to the wife’s Asian home country, where their son was born. Upon returning to Bahrain, the father attempted to obtain Bahraini documents for his son but was informed of the error in the marriage certificate.
The court case involved presenting evidence to prove the correct wedding date.
