A new subcommittee aimed at tackling the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance has been set up under the Ministry of Health.
Chaired by the Minister of Health, Her Excellency Dr Jaleela Al Sayed, the team is part of the broader National Taskforce to Combat Communicable Diseases and will be headed by the Assistant Undersecretary for Public Health.
The subcommittee, formally named the “Subcommittee for Combating Antimicrobial Resistance”, has been tasked with preparing a nationwide plan of action to combat resistance to antibiotics.
This plan will draw on guidelines from the World Health Organisation and other international health bodies.
The group will also oversee the rollout of this plan and devise practical methods to track progress, ensuring all measures are followed.
Raising awareness about antimicrobial resistance is a key focus, with efforts aimed at helping healthcare workers and the public understand the problem and its implications.
Administrative work, such as organising meetings, keeping records, and preparing minutes, will be managed by a dedicated rapporteur.
The rapporteur will also handle additional responsibilities assigned by the subcommittee or its chair. Regular updates on the subcommittee’s activities and progress will be provided to the National Taskforce to Combat Communicable Diseases by its leader.
