Burned and permanently scarred in front of her children, a mother’s dreadful experience came under scrutiny in court as the trial over a brutal acid attack was postponed to allow a psychiatric assessment of the accused, her ex-husband’s 28-year-old nephew.
The court has set 27 January 2025 as the date for the next hearing, during which it will decide if the defendant is fit to face justice.
The ghastly attack, which occurred in September 2024, unfolded in a shopping mall car park and left the 37-year-old victim with severe burns and a permanent disability affecting 60 per cent of her body.
According to prosecutors, the assault was part of a calculated revenge plot organised by the victim’s ex-husband, who allegedly instructed his nephew to carry out the crime.
On the day of the attack, the victim and her two daughters noticed a masked man loitering near their car.
When her daughters expressed concern, she approached the figure, suspecting it might be her ex-husband.
Instead, the masked man — later identified as her former nephew-in-law — ran at her with a plastic container and poured its contents, sulphuric acid, over her before fleeing.
