Five men have been handed five-year prison sentences after forging government seals and signatures to help one of them flee the country, the First High Criminal Court has ruled.

The elaborate scheme involved counterfeit documents bearing the insignia of Bahrain’s General Directorate of Nationality, Passports, and Residence.

Investigations revealed the fifth defendant escaped via the King Fahd Causeway, passing through Saudi Arabia and Kuwait before reaching Iraq.

The escape was made possible by forged stamps and signatures that extended the validity of travel documents, not only for the defendant but for other fugitives abroad.

According to a criminal investigation officer, the operation came to light following a probe ordered by the Public Prosecution.

The first to fourth defendants, who remain on the run, were found guilty of forging Bahraini passport details and affixing fake seals.

These were used to create what appeared to be a legitimate document for the fifth defendant’s escape. The fifth man was also convicted.
