Bahrain experienced a significant increase in the number of registered vehicles in 2024, according to official statistics. The total number of cars reached 768,299 by the end of December, a remarkable jump of 17,585 vehicles compared to the previous year. This surge contrasts sharply with the relatively modest increase of 2,386 vehicles registered in 2023.

The data reveals a steady climb throughout 2024. The year began with 750,714 registered vehicles in January, rising to 760,645 by June, before reaching the final figure of 768,299 in December. This represents the most significant annual increase in the past three years; in 2022, the number of registered vehicles increased by 8,170.

This dramatic rise in vehicle numbers has raised concerns about its impact on the country's infrastructure and services. The increasing congestion is placing significant strain on road networks and public services.

Addressing these challenges, Interior Minister General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, during a recent traffic council meeting, approved several developmental projects and proposals aimed at improving traffic flow and safety. These initiatives include the appointment of a consulting firm to review the traffic improvement strategy; the implementation of smart transportation systems; expansion of digital services; a study to determine the lifespan of vehicles on public roads and potentially limit their operational age; stricter enforcement of illegal parking regulations; and improved traffic awareness campaigns, particularly focusing on areas near schools to ensure student safety.

The Ministry of Works is also actively involved, undertaking several road expansion and development projects to alleviate traffic congestion. Notable projects include the development of Al Fateh Highway and the expansion of Janabiya Highway to three lanes in each direction. These ongoing efforts aim to address the challenges posed by the rapidly increasing number of vehicles on Bahrain's roads.
