The House of Representatives will debate a proposal next Tuesday to introduce new specialisations at the Bahrain Teachers College. The Services Committee has recommended approval, while the college itself has confirmed that many of the proposed changes are already underway.
The proposal, submitted by MP Dr Muneer Seroor highlights the urgent need to add new specialisations to keep pace with global advancements, particularly in artificial intelligence. Dr. Seroor also called for an evaluation and revision of existing curricula, suggesting that some programmes may no longer be relevant to the current job market.
The Bahrain Teachers College highlighted in its written response its proactive approach to curriculum development and its ongoing efforts to meet the evolving needs of the Kingdom's education sector. The college detailed many existing initiatives designed to enhance teacher training and leadership development.
These include a Master's degree in Educational Leadership developed in partnership with the University of Bahrain, a Bachelor's degree in Primary Education, a foundation year programme for prospective students, a postgraduate diploma in education, and several advanced diploma programmes focusing on areas such as leadership for teachers, special education, information technology, language and Quranic studies, as well as arts and design.
The college also offers a range of professional development certificates to support the ongoing professional growth of practicing educators, as per the response. Looking ahead, the Bahrain Teacher College emphasised its continued collaboration with the Ministry of Education to further expand and refine its academic programmes.
This collaboration is particularly focused on developing new specialisations tailored to the needs of teachers in non-core subject areas, with media studies currently under consideration as a potential new specialisation. The proposal will be presented before the House of Representatives on Tuesday for discussion and voting.
