The Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning has rejected a proposal to allow the opening of commercial establishments along Street 77 in Jid Ali. The proposal, submitted by MP Zainab Abdulameer to the Public Utilities and Environment Committee, aimed to meet the economic needs of residents and visitors, citing Street 77 as a vital commercial artery.

The MP argued that allowing commercial activity would boost the local economy, create jobs, and increase investment and sales for businesses, while also providing consumers with greater choice and convenience.

However, the Ministry stated that granting permits for commercial activities in residential areas requires the consideration of several factors, including traffic flow and the existing commercial infrastructure of the area. The Ministry emphasised that this isn't a decision they make alone; other relevant government bodies are involved.

The Ministry indicated several reasons for rejecting the proposal. Firstly, they highlighted the high population density of the residential area and the resulting traffic congestion on Street 77.

Studies, according to the Ministry, indicate that the street doesn't require additional commercial activity. Furthermore, the Ministry noted that the properties on Street 77 were originally designated for residential use, creating legal obstacles to converting them for commercial purposes.

Technical limitations also played a role in the Ministry's decision. The Ministry pointed out that the area lacks the necessary space for parking and service roads required for commercial establishments. This aligns with the government's broader policy shift towards developing commercial blocks rather than expanding individual commercial streets.

The Ministry also mentioned that the proposal was reviewed by the Complaints Committee, and that they are awaiting a written response from the Ministry of Works, which also expressed concerns about increased traffic congestion on Street 77.
