The Ministry of Works has officially inaugurated the roads leading to the Sitra housing project, marking a significant milestone in Bahrain's ongoing efforts to enhance infrastructure for new cities and housing developments. This initiative is aimed at providing integrated services and establishing a safe, efficient road network to improve connectivity.
The inauguration ceremony featured an inspection visit led by Ibrahim bin Hassan Al Hawaj, Minister of Works, and Amna bint Ahmed Al Rumaihi, Minister of Housing and Urban Planning. They were joined by Shaikh Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture; Shaikh Mishal bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Works; Fatima Ibrahim Al Mannai, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning; Saleh Mohammed Tarada, Chairman of the Capital Municipality Council; and Members of Parliament Jaleela Al Alawi and Mohsen Al Asbool.
Speaking at the event, Minister Al Hawaj emphasized that the project is an integral part of Bahrain’s strategic road network, designed to address the Kingdom’s rapid economic and urban expansion. Key features include a new four-lane road to the west of the housing city, two marine crossings for northern and southern access, and upgrades to Road No. 5, which now has three lanes in each direction and a newly installed traffic light at its intersection with Road No. 1.
“This project ensures a seamless and integrated road network across all governorates, enhancing accessibility to residential areas while meeting the needs of citizens,” Al Hawaj stated. The project, undertaken by Haji Hassan Group under the supervision of the Tender Board, also establishes additional entry and exit points to streamline access to the Sitra housing project.
In tandem with the road development, the Ministry of Works is advancing the construction of key sewage and treated water pipelines in Sitra. This initiative forms part of a broader strategy to enhance sewage services across Bahrain, fostering sustainable development while preserving environmental health.
Minister Al Rumaihi highlighted the close collaboration between government entities in building infrastructure for new housing cities, noting the positive impact on residents’ mobility and quality of life. “This progress aligns with the delivery of housing units to beneficiaries and the ongoing development of the Sitra housing project,” she said.
The Sitra housing project, spanning 243 hectares, is set to deliver over 3,000 housing units, supported by modern infrastructure and community facilities. The completed works include 19 kilometres of sewage networks, 14 kilometres of rainwater drainage systems, 18 kilometres of water pipelines, 51 kilometres of electrical cabling and street lighting, and telecommunications networks.
Phase two of the project, comprising 531 housing units, is scheduled for completion by 2025, while work has commenced on 1,269 units under phase three, accelerating the city’s growth.
This landmark development underscores Bahrain's commitment to sustainable urban planning and its dedication to meeting the needs of its citizens through innovative infrastructure solutions.
