The Shura Council gave its full backing yesterday to a law approving Bahrain’s membership in the Digital Cooperation Organisation.

The decision marks a step towards enhancing Bahrain’s influence in international efforts to tackle the rapid shifts in the digital world.

Bahrain played a founding role in establishing the organisation in 2020, joining forces with Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Jordan, and Pakistan to set up a platform aimed at improving cooperation in technology.

Since then, the organisation has grown to 16 member states, including Greece, Nigeria, and Morocco, and has attracted 39 observers from the private sector and global institutions, including the United Nations.

Investments

Speaking at the session, H.E. Shaikh Dr Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, praised Bahrain’s leadership in the field, pointing to substantial investments in telecommunications and IT infrastructure.

“Bahrain has firmly established itself as a leader in this sector,” he said, adding that membership in the organisation would enable Bahrain to exchange expertise and keep pace with legal and technological changes.

The minister also confirmed that Bahrain chaired the organisation in 2023 and remains deeply committed to its aims.
