The Council of Representatives unanimously approved an urgent proposal to resolve the pension issue affecting participants in the “Khatwa” programme.
The proposal, submitted by MPs Jalal Kadhem, Hassan Ibrahim, Eman Showaiter, Mamdooh Al Saleh, and Dr Mahdi Al Showaikh, aims to reinstate pension payments and rectify their legal status by deducting the amounts from their pensions instead of halting them entirely.
The explanatory memorandum accompanying the proposal highlighted the aim of supporting Bahraini families, particularly given the upcoming holy month of Ramadan and the financial burdens faced by those whose pensions were suspended.
The MPs emphasised that for some families, these pensions are the sole source of income.
The proposal also drew attention to the significant emotional distress caused by the pension suspension, noting that many affected individuals have made insurance contributions exceeding the legally required years for retirement, and some even purchased virtual past service credits.
The proposal further highlighted the difficult living conditions faced by the programme participants’ families, including expenses for children’s clothing and school supplies.
Before the vote, several supporting MPs intervened, affirming the government’s commitment to ensuring that neither men nor women participating in the Khatwa programme suffer loss of income and that swift action is needed to facilitate their affairs
