Public Buses Hit 101 Million Trips Since 2015

Since February 2015, Bahrain's public transport network has logged more than 101 million trips, with the latest figures showing 1,031,655 journeys recorded in December alone. Government data puts the average number of trips in the last quarter of 2024 at 99,511, with October's count at 1,019,940 and November's at 999,921.

Bahrain's fleet consists of 140 buses covering 26 routes and stopping at more than 600 locations each day. The buses are designed to meet the needs of all passengers, including those using wheelchairs and prams, with low floors and driver-operated ramps to ease boarding.

Over the same period, inspectors carried out 102 checks across the fleet. The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications, in collaboration with local councils and other bodies, has continued to work on improving public transport services. Regular reviews of routes and services are carried out, with feedback from bus users playing a key role in shaping future developments.

The public transport network in Bahrain has seen significant usage growth, with approximately 7.5 trips per person annually. In comparison, GCC countries like Riyadh report about 32 trips per capita, while cities like Dubai see around 12.3 trips per person annually.

Globally, cities like London and New York City report much higher figures, with around 562 and 446 public transport journeys per person per year, respectively. Meanwhile, Budapest boasts the highest public transport ridership per capita worldwide.
