Border checks on 522,000 tonnes of food and livestock imports and 155,000 head of livestock were tightened last year, with stricter inspections at ports and airports to block unsafe shipments.
Bahrain received 431,000 tonnes of vegetables and fruit from 134 countries in 2024, according to Eng. Asem Abdullatif, Undersecretary of Agriculture Affairs and Animal Wealth at the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture.
Animal imports, including live livestock, meat, and related products, totalled 91,612 tonnes, pointing to a growing demand.
All livestock shipments underwent veterinary and laboratory testing to check for disease.
Imported animals were held in quarantine under international rules before being cleared for sale.
Shipments
Most shipments entered through Khalifa Bin Salman Port, followed by the King Fahd Causeway and Bahrain International Airport.
Officials carried out more than 12,000 laboratory tests throughout the year to ensure compliance with food safety rules.
The ministry said inspections were stepped up across all entry points, with continued coordination with local and overseas authorities to maintain safe and steady supplies.
