A stretch of Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Highway has been widened to take an extra 3,400 vehicles per hour, lifting capacity by 25 per cent and easing the northbound run to the capital.
The Ministry of Works has finished roadworks on the 1.4-kilometre stretch between Shaikh Zayed Highway and the Saar Intersection as part of a wider push to ease congestion and handle growing traffic.
The highway, running from the Al Farooq Junction to Zallaq Highway, is one of the main links between the north and south of the country.
Phases
The ministry is expanding it in phases based on planning priorities and the readiness of designs. This round of works saw the road widened to five lanes, metal barriers in the median swapped for concrete ones, and several services relocated.
Water pipes, power lines, and irrigation networks were shifted to clear the way for roadworks and landscaping.
A separate section between the Seef Intersection and Budaiya Highway was widened earlier as part of ongoing upgrades to the road network.
Infrastructure upgrades
The ministry said it would keep working to improve road safety and traffic flow, while pressing on with wider infrastructure upgrades in line with long-term development goals.
It also acknowledged the General Directorate of Traffic at the Interior Ministry for keeping traffic moving safely while work was carried out.
Drivers were thanked for following signs and diversions, which the ministry said helped ensure the project stayed on track.
