Fugitive caught carrying fake passport stamps

A fugitive who fled Bahrain by sea in 2016 returned years later through the airport with a passport carrying fake renewal stamps — only to be caught when an immigration officer flagged his expired travel document.
Now on trial before the High Criminal Court, he insists he had no part in the forgery, claiming his passport was handled by clearance agents in Iran and that he had no knowledge of the fake stamps.
The court has set a hearing for 2 March for the defence’s plea.
Multiple charges
The accused had been wanted on multiple charges when he slipped out of the country illegally, making his way to Iran.
However, on his return to Bahrain, he presented a passport that raised suspicions at immigration.
An officer at Bahrain International Airport, while carrying out routine checks, noticed that the system still showed the man as being inside the country.
Further scrutiny revealed he was a wanted man. He admitted to fleeing by sea.
