Countrywide roadworks have been approved by the Cabinet, with Riffa Road set to be widened to four lanes as part of a drive to ease congestion and improve Bahrain’s transport network, the Works Minister, His Excellency Ibrahim Al Hawaj, told Parliament yesterday.
The expansion, which includes redesigned junctions and upgrades to key links such as Shaikh Isa bin Salman Highway, will be handled by a specialist firm brought in to oversee the design and construction.
“The ministry is pressing ahead with a full-scale upgrade of roads across all governorates,” Al Hawaj said.
He confirmed that government backing had been secured for a long-term plan to strengthen the country’s transport links, with Riffa Avenue among the key routes identified for work. He said while preparations were in motion, electricity infrastructure in the area needed to be addressed before construction could begin.
“Roadworks are moving ahead quickly,” he noted.
