Indian political leader’s maiden visit to Bahrain
Indian political leader and former Chief Minister of Indian State of Kerala V.S. Achuthanandan will arrive in Bahrain today. This is his maiden visit to a Gulf country. He will participate in the closing ceremony of the Sree Narayana Cultural Society Bahrain’s (SNCS) silver jubilee celebrations.
The silver jubilee celebrations will take place on the Indian School ground in Isa Town today at 5pm.
Achuthanandan was Chief Minister of Kerala from 2006 to 2011and he has been Leader of the Opposition in Kerala since 2011.
SNCS President Shaji Karthikeyan, who was instrumental in bringing the 92-year-old leader to Bahrain for the first time, said the programme would be attended by around 10,000 people, coming from different Gulf States.
Bahrain Keraleeya Samajam and Prathibha, a socio-cultural organisation, will give a public reception to the veteran leader on Saturday evening at the BKS diamond jubilee hall in Segaya.
Achuthanandan took the lead in promoting Free Software in the State, and especially in adopting free software in the public education system of the state.
V.S. Achuthanandan was in the forefront of the land struggles in Kerala starting with the Alappuzha declaration in 1970 demanding implementation of the Land Reforms Act passed by the EMS Government in 1967.
Later his activities as the leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly had evoked good public response.
