The crescent moon has been sighted in Saudi Arabia yesterday, announcing the start of Ramadan for 1.8 billion Muslims worldwide.
In an official statement, both Bahrain and Saudi Arabia announced that Saturday marks the first day of Ramadan for their residents.
Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, lasts 29 or 30 days, aligning with the 354 or 355-day lunar year.
Fasting from sunrise to sunset is one of the five pillars of Islam and is obligatory for all healthy adult Muslims. However, exemptions apply to young children, the sick, travelers, and women who are pregnant, nursing, or menstruating.
For centuries, Muslims have observed the tradition of crescent moon sightings to determine the start of Ramadan and the two major Islamic holidays, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.
