Tied up with plastic restraints, threatened with a knife, and stripped of their cash and phones — three Asian men fell prey to a late-night home invasion by two men, one of whom posed as a policeman.
The attackers made off with their loot, but the law caught up with them. Now, the High Criminal Court of Appeal has upheld the five-year prison sentence handed down to both men. The crime took place late on 24 May 2023 in Juffair.
Records
According to court records, the first defendant knocked on the victims’ door, claiming to be a police officer.
When one of the residents opened up, the two men barged inside. The ruse was convincing enough to keep them from resisting.
The fake officer barked orders, telling them to kneel, face the wall, and put their hands behind their backs.
Then came the plastic restraints, cutting off any chance of escape.
Defendant
With the two men tied up, the second defendant got to work.
He rifled through their pockets and bags, turning the place inside out. BD46 from one victim’s shirt, BD200 from his bag, BD400 from another’s wallet — every last dinar was taken.
Haul
Two phones, a charger, toiletries, and a small sum from a third victim’s room rounded out the haul.
A fruit-cutting knife was then plucked from the fridge. The first defendant waved it in their faces, warning them to stay quiet or get stabbed.
Resistance
Any thoughts of resistance faded. The two men emptied the place at their leisure and slipped away into the night.
When police tracked them down, the case was clear. The prosecution charged them with robbery by coercion.
The lower court sentenced each of them to five years behind bars. They appealed, but the verdict stands.
