Two workers who came to Bahrain for jobs in a food shop say they ended up doing long hours of construction and cleaning at their employer’s home for a fraction of their agreed pay.
Their passports were taken, their wages slashed, and their work contracts, they claim, were faked and handed to the authorities.
The pair had been promised jobs in the shop with a monthly wage of BD140.
Instead, they were put to work carrying bricks, cutting metal, painting, and scrubbing floors, sometimes for as little as BD60 a month.
They say they were shouted at, hit, and left without days off.
An investigation found their work contracts had been forged, with forensic checks confirming their signatures were faked.
Authorities also discovered previous complaints against the employer for keeping workers’ passports and withholding wages.
The Public Prosecution charged him with human trafficking.
