An Asian man caught trying to smuggle more than 120 drug capsules inside his body into Bahrain will serve his full five-year sentence after losing his appeal. He had arrived on a flight from his home country and was stopped at Bahrain International Airport.

A customs officer, unconvinced by his answers, directed him to the red lane and questioned him.

The man insisted he had nothing illegal, but his nervous manner gave him away.

Brief examination

A doctor was called in, and after a brief examination, the man was sent to hospital.

Scans revealed foreign objects inside him. Pressed further, he admitted he was carrying drugs.

Medical staff carried out a procedure to extract them — more than 120 tightly packed capsules of hashish.

He later confessed to sealing the drugs into capsules before setting off, planning to smuggle them in undetected.

But investigations uncovered a bigger picture. He was not acting alone. Security services found he was part of a trafficking ring.

Prosecutors charged him with bringing hashish and psychotropic substances into Bahrain for trade, along with possession for personal use.

He appealed after the court handed him five years, but it made no difference as the ruling stands.
