In an ongoing effort to enforce maritime laws and crack down on illegal fishing practices, the Coast Guard successfully apprehended four Asian fishermen who were caught engaging in prohibited shrimp fishing. The incident took place in a restricted period of the year, as outlined by ministerial regulations.
According to the Coast Guard, the patrols spotted the fishermen’s boat in the waters near the King Fahd Causeway. Upon being instructed to stop for inspection, the individuals attempted to flee and even tried to collide with the patrol boats. However, the authorities managed to intercept the vessel and detain the suspects, who were found in possession of banned bottom trawl nets.
The illegal fishing equipment was seized, and legal procedures are underway to refer the case to the Public Prosecution.
The Coast Guard has urged all sea-goers to comply with patrol instructions when requested to stop for inspection. Fishermen are also reminded to adhere to regulations regarding banned fishing periods and prohibited equipment. The authorities emphasized the importance of sustainable fishing practices to protect marine life, preserve fishery resources, and safeguard natural reserves for the public good.
