A woman accused of harassing her ex-husband through abusive text messages was acquitted after the court ruled that the messages originated from an international number with no proven link to her.
She had been fined BD50 through a criminal order, but challenged the decision, and the court overturned it, ruling that there was no solid proof against her.
Her lawyer, Ebrahim Khalil, said prosecutors had accused her of defaming three people in December 2023 via phone in a way that harmed their standing, without specifying any incidents.
Nuisance
She was also charged with deliberately causing a nuisance to four people by misusing telecommunications.
Prosecutors argued that her actions fell under Articles 290, 365(1), and 366(1) of the Penal Code, and issued a criminal order fining her BD50.
She objected to the ruling, taking the matter to court.
Personal attack
During hearings, her lawyer insisted the charges were groundless, calling them a personal attack.
He pointed out that prosecutors had based their case entirely on her ex-husband’s statement in the initial investigation.
The lawyer had claimed she sent him messages and videos that unsettled him, including footage showing the alleged victims at a gathering, alongside remarks implying he was out celebrating with women.
Two of the complainants said they had received text messages accusing them of theft, fraud, and making threats.
A fourth said he had been sent a video of himself at a wedding, with the sender claiming it was a brothel — an apparent attempt to smear his name.
