A man and his nephew convicted of planning and carrying out a sulphuric acid attack on his ex-wife are due to appear before the Supreme Criminal Appeals Court on 7 April.
The two men were each handed a 10-year prison sentence after the court found them guilty of a pre-planned assault that left the woman with lasting injuries and scarring.
The defence is expected to present its argument in the upcoming session.
The attack happened on 13 September 2024 in a shopping mall car park.
Masked man
The woman was walking to her car when a masked man rushed at her and threw acid in her face and upper body.
She had tried to film him on her phone moments earlier, likely sensing something was wrong.
He threw the liquid in two quick bursts before running from the scene. He later rang his uncle — the woman’s former husband — and told him it was done.
Marriage
According to the case file, the pair’s marriage ended with a court ruling after a bitter period marked by rows and mistrust. Rather than parting ways, the second defendant, the ex-husband, carried on trailing her movements.
He planted tracking devices in her car and sent threats — some of them via his sister — saying he would disfigure her with acid and either drag her back into marriage or kill her.
Two weeks before the incident, the nephew was told his uncle had been sentenced to a year and a half in prison.
