The Kingdom of Bahrain has officially launched its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2026-2027 term, following approval from the Cabinet. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, welcomed the decision, emphasizing Bahrain’s commitment to global peace, security, and sustainable development.

Dr. Al Zayani stated that Bahrain’s candidacy reflects the leadership’s vision under His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. He highlighted that the Kingdom seeks to reinforce international partnerships aimed at promoting regional and global stability, enhancing human solidarity, and upholding international law.

The minister noted that Bahrain’s foreign policy, guided by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, is founded on principles of mutual respect, non-interference, and cooperation. He stressed that Bahrain’s diplomatic approach aligns with its long-standing values of peaceful coexistence and dialogue, further strengthened by initiatives such as the "King Hamad Global Center for Peaceful Coexistence."

Expressing appreciation for the support from Arab, Islamic, and Asia-Pacific nations, Dr. Al Zayani underscored the Kingdom’s diplomatic credibility, citing its previous tenure on the Security Council from 1998 to 1999. He acknowledged the confidence placed in Bahrain by the international community and pledged to enhance the effectiveness of multilateral cooperation under the UN framework.

As part of its priorities, Bahrain aims to advocate for sustainable peace, promote humanitarian relief efforts, combat extremism and terrorism, and strengthen cyber, environmental, food, water, and maritime security. The Kingdom also seeks to bolster the Security Council’s efficiency and inclusiveness while fostering transparency in its operations.

Dr. Al Zayani reaffirmed Bahrain’s support for the adoption of an international convention criminalizing religious, sectarian, and racial hate speech, in line with His Majesty the King's call before the Inter-Parliamentary Union. He reiterated the Kingdom’s dedication to advancing a culture of peace and understanding on the global stage.

With its extensive diplomatic experience and ongoing presidency of the Council of the League of Arab States, Bahrain remains committed to implementing key initiatives, including an international conference for peace in the Middle East and advocating for full recognition of the State of Palestine within the UN. The Kingdom also aims to enhance financial technology cooperation and digital transformation while supporting sustainable development goals.

Dr. Al Zayani concluded by reaffirming Bahrain’s determination to play an influential role in shaping a safer and more prosperous world. Under the leadership of His Majesty the King and the guidance of His Royal Highness the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Bahrain continues to champion peace, dialogue, and collective action for global stability and development.
