Plans to put up welcome signs at Manama’s main entry points was approved by the Capital Trustees Board yesterday, in a move aimed at giving the city a clearer sense of arrival and identity.

The idea, brought forward by board member Dr Bashar Ahmadi, involves placing signs at key roads into the capital — ones that do more than just say hello.

According to Dr Ahmadi, they would mark out the city’s edges and carry a design that draws on Manama’s cultural and artistic style.

“We want visitors to feel they’ve entered somewhere distinct,” Dr Ahmadi said. “The signs should speak for the city’s spirit without needing to explain it.”

Deputy Chairwoman Khalood Al Qattan called the plan a sound one, noting the steady flow of visitors into Manama and the need to meet them with a sense of place.

Councillor Huda Sultan suggested putting signs in two spots — one facing those coming in from Muharraq, the other greeting drivers from the King Fahad Causeway.

Capital Municipality’s Director-General, Eng. Mohammed Al Sahli, reminded the board that there’s already a sign up near Bahrain Financial Harbour, one that reads “A More Beautiful Capital”.
