Manama’s ageing souq is getting a taskforce.
Yesterday, the Capital Trustees Board backed a plan to set up a group that will bring together traders, municipal staff, and the board itself to sort out failing services and revive one of Bahrain’s most storied quarters.
The souq, long at the heart of the capital, has been left behind. Cracked pavements, shoddy maintenance and a general sense of drift have left shopkeepers fending for themselves.
Councillors said it was time the area was given a new lease of life.
The move stems from a proposal tabled in February by Dr Abdulhassan Hassan Abbas.
It was reviewed by the Services and Facilities Committee.
