Bahrain has officially launched its diplomatic campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2026–2027 term. The initiative began with a high-level meeting held today at the United Nations headquarters in New York, where Bahrain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, met with the permanent representatives of Arab states to the UN.

The meeting, hosted by Bahrain’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, aimed to rally support from Arab nations for the Kingdom’s candidacy in the upcoming elections scheduled for June 3, 2025, at the UN General Assembly.

Opening the session, H.E. Mr. Taher El-Sonni, Permanent Representative of Libya to the UN and current Chair of the Arab Group, welcomed Dr. Al Zayani and expressed the Arab bloc’s strong support for Bahrain’s bid. He wished the Kingdom success in achieving its goals on the Security Council.

In his remarks, Dr. Al Zayani extended his gratitude to the Arab delegates for attending and for their unwavering commitment to multilateral diplomacy and peace-building. He emphasized Bahrain’s dedication to contributing constructively to international peace and security, should it be elected.

The Foreign Minister also commended the efforts of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria during its current term on the Council in championing Arab causes. He reaffirmed Bahrain’s intention to build on the legacy of previous Arab members, aiming to strengthen global cooperation for peace, security, and sustainable development.

“Under the wise leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and with the dedicated work of the government led by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Bahrain remains committed to a vision of a secure, stable, and interconnected Middle East,” Dr. Al Zayani stated.

He stressed that this vision is not merely aspirational, but essential for the progress and prosperity of all nations in the region. “It calls for unified Arab action and a firm, collective voice that reflects our shared aspirations and actively seeks sustainable solutions for the region,” he added.

Bahrain’s campaign reflects its long-standing commitment to international cooperation and its growing role on the global stage. If successful, this will mark another milestone in the Kingdom’s evolving foreign policy agenda.
