The humanitarian crisis in Gaza topped the agenda during a high-level meeting between Bahrain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres at the UN Headquarters in New York.
As part of Dr. Al Zayani’s official visit to the United Nations, the two officials held in-depth discussions on the worsening situation in Gaza and the urgent need for sustained international efforts to address it. They emphasized the importance of upholding the ceasefire, protecting civilians, securing the release of hostages and detainees, and de-escalating regional tensions.
A major point of discussion was the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in the Gaza Strip. Both sides acknowledged the critical role played by the UN and its agencies in ensuring the flow of humanitarian assistance to affected civilians. In particular, they highlighted the pivotal efforts of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), which continues to provide essential services amidst extremely challenging circumstances.
In addition to the Gaza crisis, Dr. Al Zayani and Secretary-General Guterres also reviewed broader cooperation between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the United Nations across various sectors. The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of both sides to strengthening their longstanding partnership on shared global priorities.
The talks also touched on Bahrain’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2026–2027 term. Dr. Al Zayani outlined the Kingdom’s vision and priorities for its potential membership, emphasizing its dedication to supporting peace, security, and the principles of the UN Charter.
The meeting was attended by senior Bahraini officials including Ambassador Sheikh Abdullah bin Ali Al Khalifa, Director General of Bilateral Relations; Ambassador Jamal Fares Al-Ruwaie, Bahrain’s Permanent Representative to the UN in New York; Ambassador Talal Abdulsalam Al Ansari, Director General of Foreign Ministry Affairs; Ambassador Saeed Abdulkhaliq Saeed, Head of the Coordination and Follow-up Sector; and Mr. Hatem Abdulhamid Hatem, Head of the Organizations Sector
