Parliament has rejected a Shura-backed proposal to amend Bahrain’s Public Health Law by requiring a national plan to combat antimicrobial resistance, arguing that the measures it sought are already being implemented.

The proposal aimed to require the Ministry of Health to draw up a national plan to tackle antimicrobial resistance.

It called for a written approach to curb the misuse of antibiotics, cut drug-resistant infections and raise awareness among medical staff and the public.

MPs saw no need for it. They said the work is already being done and saw no reason to write it into law.

The proposal was voted down in yesterday’s session and returned to the upper chamber.

“There is clear overlap between the content of this draft law and the tasks already assigned to the National Taskforce for Communicable Diseases,” said MP Jalal Kadhem. “Why are we moving towards forming new committees at the expense of others already doing the job?”
