Imports through Bahrain’s main port jumped 228 per cent in February, reaching 105,028 tonnes.

This was the highest monthly figure recorded in over a year. The sharp rise at Khalifa Bin Salman Port came after a quieter January, which saw only 32,445 tonnes moved.

In February 2024, the total had stood at 65,470 tonnes, making this year’s figure roughly 60 per cent higher.

In total, the first two months of 2025 saw 137,473 tonnes of general cargo pass through the port.

That compares with 99,000 tonnes during the same period last year. Khalifa Bin Salman Port, through which Bahrain receives the bulk of its goods, has experienced increasing traffic since early 2024.

In 2023, volumes varied widely, ranging from just 3,245 tonnes in January to a peak of 77,463 tonnes in August.

The year ended with a quiet December at 7,144 tonnes. In 2024, trade picked up, with July registering 113,526 tonnes. February also saw a marked rise at the time with 65,470 tonnes.

While general cargo rose sharply, the number of containers moved through the port declined.

In February 2025, the port handled 27,718 containers, measured in 20-foot equivalent units, compared with 31,698 in February 2024.

This marks a fall of just over 12 per cent.

Vehicle numbers also dropped. A total of 3,132 were processed this February, down from 3,661 the previous year.
