Fooled into backing a business he never truly joined, a man has been awarded BD4,600 after a court found he was misled into handing over cash for a car accessories venture that was not what it seemed. The High Civil Court ruled that the man had paid the sum in three parts, over several weeks, expecting to become a partner in a trading licence.
The arrangement, according to his claim, was straightforward: his money in exchange for a stake in a shop. But as the court later heard, the defendant didn’t own the licence at all. He had taken it on rent from the actual holder and passed it off as his own. No paperwork was signed. No profits were shared. When pressed to formalise the deal, the defendant dodged and delayed.
The claimant supported his case with WhatsApp chats, a letter before action, and a copy of the commercial registration showing the real owner. The defendant never turned up in court and filed no defence.
