A pile of rotting rubbish in Block 1205, Hamad Town, was cleared at dawn yesterday after residents raised the alarm over the stench and the creeping risk of pests. Councillor Abdulla Mubarak Bilal, who represents the area on the Northern Municipal Council, organised a field inspection with backing from several government departments.

Staff from the Supreme Council for the Environment, Civil Defence, the Ministry of Works, the Ministry of Health, the Housing and Urban Planning Ministry, and the Northern Municipality took part in the visit.

Clean-up

The clean-up began in the early hours, with the municipality removing waste and violations before the group arrived.

That cleared the way for a site assessment and a series of decisions to keep rubbish from returning.

The municipality said it would fill and seal off the site.

Concrete barriers

Civil Defence proposed concrete barriers at the entrance from Avenue 3 to block vehicle access.

The Ministry of Health flagged a shortage of pesticides for dealing with snakes and mole crickets, both reportedly seen in the area.

The Ministry of Works said it would dredge a nearby channel to stop water from collecting and turning foul.

Immediate problem

According to the environment council, the rubbish removal had dealt with the immediate problem.

No further steps were needed for the time being.

Councillor Bilal said joint fieldwork like this was key to keeping neighbourhoods in order.
