A proposal requiring two parking spaces per flat in new commercial apartment buildings across the Southern Governorate has been backed in full by the Southern Municipal Council.
The plan, tabled by councillor Mohammed Darraj, is intended to address pressure on parking in residential neighbourhoods. Developers would be obliged to include a minimum of two bays for every unit in upcoming projects.
“It serves the interests of both citizens and residents,” Mr Darraj said. “The aim is to ensure enough parking is available and to ease the tensions that often arise between neighbours over space.”
The council’s technical committee recommended that the requirement be written into the building rulebook as part of town planning conditions. Councillors agreed the measure was necessary, citing overcrowding and a steady rise in housing density.
