Gas cylinders stacked beside exposed wiring, inside a crumbling house next to a women’s matam. That is what inspectors found in Jid Al Haj after families in the area raised the alarm.
The inspection followed a petition signed by residents and submitted to the Northern Municipal Council, calling for action over the use of a nearby home to house labourers.
Their main concern was that the property sits next to a religious hall used by women.
Leading the visit was council chairman Dr Sayed Shubbar Al Wadaei.
He was joined by staff from the Northern Governorate, Northern Municipality, Civil Defence, regional police, the Electricity and Water Authority (EWA), the Supreme Council for the Environment, the Jid Al Haj Charity Society and local residents.
Inspectors
Inside the house, inspectors found broken walls, trailing cables, gas canisters stored indoors and a makeshift kitchen that failed basic safety and hygiene rules.
They also recorded breaches of municipal rules, including unauthorised partitions, poor sanitation and waste left unmanaged.
Each body is preparing a report on the site, with steps to be recommended for dealing with the case and curbing similar setups elsewhere.
