A proposal to grant firefighters hazard pay and dedicated insurance cover will go before Parliament on Tuesday, with the backing of the National Security and Internal Affairs Committee.

Put forward by MP Maryam Al Dhaen, the proposal calls on the government to provide a monthly allowance recognising the risks firefighters face on the front lines of blazes and accidents. It also seeks comprehensive medical protection through a specialised insurance scheme.

In its written response, the Interior Ministry stated that hazard allowances are already in place for Public Security Forces personnel, including firefighters. These allowances, it said, are reviewed and adjusted based on job demands. The ministry also noted that medical treatment—locally or abroad—is provided for those injured in the line of duty, and that a separate fund exists to support such cases.

During a meeting on February 3, ministry officials reiterated that risk is inherent in most public security roles and argued that singling out one group for additional benefits would be unfair. They also said existing insurance policies already cover all personnel.

Despite this, the parliamentary committee found the proposal well-founded. Its report highlighted the unique and intense dangers faced by firefighters, including exposure to high heat, smoke, and life-threatening situations. It also cited international practices where similar roles receive targeted support.

“Firefighters are constantly thrown into danger to protect others,” said Ms Al Dhaen. “Even if they escape injury, many suffer from long-term illnesses related to their work. They deserve more than gratitude—they deserve real protection.”

Parliament is scheduled to debate and vote on the proposal during Tuesday’s session.
