Obesity on the rise in Jid Ali due to lack of sports facilities, warns MP
Rising obesity levels in Jid Ali are linked to a lack of space for exercise, MP Zainab AbdulAmeer has warned, urging the government to allocate land for a football pitch to give youth a place to train and stay active.
“There isn’t a single football field in Jid Ali, even though it’s one of the most densely populated areas,” she said. “This affects physical and moral health — sport prevents diseases like obesity and heart issues, while also shaping character.”
The parliamentary Services Committee backed the proposal, but the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning said there’s currently no available land in the area, with only one pitch in Block 721. The General Sports Authority said the project could be included in future plans if funding is secured. The Capital Municipal Council also voiced support, calling it a much-needed community investment. The matter is set to be discussed in Tuesday’s parliamentary session.
