Parliament will on Tuesday review a proposal urging the Ministry of Industry and Commerce to tighten oversight of accountants and auditors.

The measure, put forward by five MPs — Jaleela Alawi, Dr Hisham Al Ashiri, Mohsen Al Asbool, Mohammed Al Olaiwi and Mahdi Al Shuwaikh — calls for stronger monitoring and swift action against firms that breach regulations.

The Financial and Economic Affairs Committee has backed the proposal, citing the public interest.

Lead proponent Jaleela Alawi noted that while the ministry has a sizeable inspection team, violations remain few and far between.

“There are many trained inspectors, yet only a handful of breaches have been recorded,” she said. “Given how closely this field touches people’s lives, tighter scrutiny is essential.”

The MPs argue that firmer enforcement would safeguard public trust and ensure higher professional standards.
