MP Mohammed Jassim Al Olaiwi has asked to step down from the parliamentary committee investigating the performance of the government’s housing schemes.

His request was submitted in writing to the Bureau of the Council of Representatives, citing what he described as a lack of seriousness in the committee’s work.

The committee was formed at the start of the current legislative term.

It is looking into the fairness of housing unit distribution, the workings of the Mazaya and Tas’heel schemes, and the handling of unresolved land applications.

It is also following the progress of new towns, reviewing efforts to involve private developers in meeting demand, and questioning the legal basis of interest charged on housing services.

The committee is chaired by MP Mohammed Al Balooshi, with Bader Al Tamimi serving as deputy chair.

Its members include Khalid Buanaq, Eman Showaiter, Zainab AbdulAmeer, Hesham Al Awadhi and, until now, Mohammed Al Olaiwi.
