Bahrain Marks Earth Day with Renewed Commitment to Environmental Protection and Sustainability

On the occasion of Earth Day, observed annually on April 22, Minister of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture, H.E. Eng. Wael bin Nasser Al Mubarak, reaffirmed Bahrain’s commitment to environmental protection and the sustainable use of natural resources.

The minister emphasized the Kingdom’s dedication to advancing the National Afforestation Plan, which aims to double the number of trees in Bahrain from 1.8 million to 3.6 million by 2035. He stated that the ministry continues to expand greening initiatives and tree-planting efforts in line with global calls to reduce harmful waste and promote sustainable waste management.

Al Mubarak highlighted Bahrain’s ongoing implementation of the National Carbon Neutrality Action Plan, as announced by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. The plan reflects Bahrain’s direction toward a more sustainable future by embracing best environmental practices to address the challenges of climate change.

He also praised the initiatives led by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, which focus on environmental protection and the expansion of afforestation projects across the Kingdom.

In the same context, the minister applauded the achievements of the “Mangrove Bahrain” initiative, launched by His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Salman Al Khalifa, for its significant role in safeguarding marine ecosystems and preserving natural resources. Bahrain has made notable progress in mangrove reforestation, further strengthening its environmental legacy.

The Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture, according to Al Mubarak, continues to roll out various environmental initiatives. These include improving waste management services, expanding green spaces, enhancing sustainable waste disposal methods, and supporting a culture of recycling through the establishment of dedicated waste collection centers across the country.

In his closing remarks, the minister described Earth Day as a vital opportunity to renew Bahrain’s commitment to environmental conservation and natural resource preservation. He underscored that these efforts are essential pillars of sustainable development and quality of life, emphasizing that the land is a core part of national identity and an enduring source of prosperity for future generations
